Eating Healthy On-the-Go Is Easier Than You Think

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Being a busy student or professional can sometimes mean grabbing less than healthy meals as you run out the door or try to squeeze them in between courses and on work breaks. Yet being busy doesn’t have to mean that you must sacrifice having healthy, well-balanced meals. There are lots of ways that you can help fit healthy eating into your life, no matter how busy you may be in a given day, week or month.

Not having time to eat healthy is one of the biggest excuses for indulging in fatty, sugary foods but it isn’t an excuse that holds any weight. It’s simple to eat healthy when you’re busy if you plan ahead. Working with your schedule, set aside time to shop for and prep your food for the week. This means being smart about what you buy and purchasing much more fresh fruit and vegetables than processed, prepackaged meals. You’ll also want to make a menu for the week and ensure you have all the ingredients you’ll need to cook or prepare meals so you’ll have no excuses to run out for fast food later.

Once you’ve gotten your selections home, make it easy on yourself to eat healthy while super busy by putting foods like granola, carrots, and grapes into serving size containers. This way, you’ll be able to simply grab a container and go, without any preparation on that day. If you have time, cook healthy foods like chicken breasts and whole wheat pastas in large batches and leave them in the fridge or the freezer for yourself to eat later. This way, you’ll never feel like you don’t have a healthy meal on hand that you can eat and prepare in minutes.

Finally, if you do need to eat out, make sure you’re making healthy choices both in the restaurant you choose and the item you order from the menu. When you’re stressed out a cheeseburger, fries and a shake might seem like comforting food, but you’re not giving your body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and energized.

While it might take a little more effort up front, eating healthy is possible when you have a busy schedule. Better yet, it will provide you with the energy and balanced nutrition you need to keep yourself going through the busiest days and your body deserves to have the fuel it needs when it does so much work for you.
