How to Be Socially Responsible in College

Being socially responsible means living with concern for the greater good. Whether it’s the environment, human rights, or protecting animals, what you do in college can have an impact on the world. Think carefully about your actions, what you support, and how you live your life in college so that you can be more socially responsible. These tips will help you learn more about being a socially responsible college student.
Go to a socially responsible college. Before you enroll, take a look at your college’s policies. Do they give money to organizations that are or aren’t socially responsible? Are socially responsible suppliers and companies a priority for the campus? What kind of socially responsible programs do they have? Ask for answers to all of these questions to make sure that the college is right for you.
Get your financial aid from socially responsible organizations. Think carefully about who you want to take money from, especially if you’re getting student loans. Is the bank you’re getting a loan with a company that you’re proud to work with? Although you may feel like you’re taking from them now, eventually you will be paying them, with interest, and you should ensure that your money will be used in a way that you can feel good about.
Be a socially aware consumer. When making purchases and supporting companies, find out a bit about their policies. Find out about suppliers, animal and human rights, environmental concerns, and more before you buy.
Follow a major that complements social responsibility. Study human welfare or the environment in college so that what you learn while you’re in school can help you do good for the world. You may even be able to create a socially responsible career out of your college studies and spend your working days making the world a better place for all.
Discuss social responsibility with others. Find or create a group on campus that promotes the ideas of being socially responsible. Hold rallies, create information pamphlets, and talk to other students about the social responsibility issues that are most important to you.
Social responsibility takes a lot of time and effort, but in the end, it’s worth knowing that you’re living your life in a way that’s good for others. By paying attention to what you support and taking steps to share social responsibility, you can make a great impact, even while you’re still in college.
