Maintaining a Good Work-Life Balance Is Essential for Students
Wednesday, May 27th, 2009
As a student, you more than likely find yourself juggling many aspects of your life including school, work, family, extracurricular activities, personal time and a social life. With so much on your plate, finding a balance between these different obligations can be hard. Establishing time for both work and fun in your life is essential to doing well and being happy in college and is also a skill that will serve you well throughout your adult life.
Knowing how to balance your schoolwork and all the other obligations you have in life is the first step to getting better grades and generally performing better while you’re a student. You will be able to get the things you need and want to accomplish done and still have a little time on the side to pursue interests and have fun with your friends. Of course, getting to a point when these things are pretty well evenly shared in your time can be a challenge.
The most important factor in determining your ability to balance work and life are your time management skills. Without the ability to schedule, plan ahead and avoid too much procrastination, you’ll have a hard time balancing anything. To improve your time management, you’ll need some serious self-discipline, a calendar, and an organizational system. Once you know what you have to accomplish and the time frame you have to accomplish it in, the rest becomes a whole lot easier.
Once you’ve laid out your obligations to school, work, friends and other activities you’ll be able to determine if you’re trying to do too much. There are times when you simple won’t be able to do everything you want to do and you’ll need to figure out what your real priorities are as a student. Try to get rid of any unnecessary obligations and focus on the things that matter to you most. Of course, don’t neglect having any fun to concentrate on schoolwork and vice versa. The point is to achieve balance, not to run your grades or your social life into the ground.
When it comes to work and fun, there can be too much of a good thing. Learning to balance out the things you want to do with the things you have to do will help you make it through college with a whole lot less stress and leaving you feeling like the happier, well-balanced individual you want to be as you prepare to emerge into the real world.
